This is my first time to attend the Whisky Live here in Manila. The biggest international whisky event in the world and now on its 4th year here in Manila – October 18-19, 2019. The event allows guests to try over 180+ top notch different types of whisky, bourbons and blends from different parts of the world. There are different activities which includes the master classes where in 12 International Whisky Masters share their knowledge to educate the whisky lovers on how to properly taste and understand the different tasting notes of each whisky. Other activities are bartending competition, raffles, book signings, whisky awards and best dressed competition.
I decided not to drive going to the Whisky Live Manila 2019 at Grand Hyatt Manila in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) because I want to enjoy this event and I’m abiding the RA 10586 Law. 🙂 Dont drink and drive! 😉
The event started at 6PM, you need to register first, they will give you a paper wristband with a dinner stub and you need to sign a waiver form. After you’ve signed the waiver, you will present it to the bar at the entrance. You will be given an event guide, Glencairn whisky glass with an organic straw by Kanin Products, Whisky Live Manila Eco Bag then inside it are Evian – Natural Mineral Water and 10 color coded chips. The color-coded chips are for voting and sample drinks. The white chip is for the best booth, the blue chip is for the People’s Choice Whisky. The 8 red chips are for the sample drinks, one chip per drink. You can get another set after undergoing the breathalyzer test and clearance by the medical personnel.
Most of the booths didn’t get my red chips so I was able to taste 20+ top notch whiskies plus beer and mixed drinks. It’s important that your stomach is not empty. I tried a couple of shots in Glenmoray and Glengoyne booth before I had my dinner. Drinking on an empty stomach gets you drunk faster. I did my research before going to the event and have a list of different whiskies (my cheat sheet). Here’s my whisky list.
- Glendronach 15 Year Old Revival
- Glengoyne Legacy Series, Chapter One
- Ardbeg Traigh Bhan
- Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14 Year Old
- Highland Park 16 Year Old Twisted Tattoo
- Balvenie 12 Year Old the Sweet Toast of American Oak
- Highland Park
I was able to try the different brands except for Glendronach. I’m also with my kumpare and his wife, we visited each booth and enjoyed nosing and tasting different whiskies. Some cool booths are Monkey Shoulder it has an arcade theme and Glenmorangie booth with gorgeous models and a virtual reality (VR) headset. I tried the VR and watched the history of their whisky while giving you instructions on how to drink and enjoy your glass of whisky. A satisfying orange and chocolate finish for the Glenmorangie.
After visiting the booths, we went back to Kavalan and gave them the blue chips! We tried the Kavalan Solist Port Cask Single Malt Whisky which have a fruity, nutty flavors you can smell and the fruitiness blended with chocolate aroma will melt delicately on your palate. The next is the Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique, rich vanilla and caramel aroma, blend of citrus fruits and a very clean taste. I think we had 3 shots each of these whiskies because of the smoothness, Kudos Kavalan!
Another cool booth is Jameson an Irish Whiskey and its our favorite whisky to drink on a tambay / inuman session / house party because its affordable and have a clean taste. They have an awesome photobooth setup, you just need to register, and you will be given a Jameson t-shirt or a pin. Luckily, we got ‘em both, big thanks to Ina of Jameson for giving us a couple of Jameson Black Barrel shots and the pin!
Here are other whisky brands that surprised our palates. We were amazed with the Ardbeg 10 yrs, it leaves a strong smoky taste in your tongue and the Highland Park 12 has a sweet with a smoky peat and an after taste of cappuccino.
It was a great experience to attend this once a year event. I recommend this to all whisky aficionados. I enjoyed all of the whiskies and didn’t felt drunk not until we rode home on a cab (with the usual cab smell that makes you feel grogy).
To enjoy your whisky tasting, take your time. Spend as long as you can in nosing, take a sniff and enjoy the aroma. This step is often skipped by a lot of people, smelling your whisky can help you pick up the flavors that you wouldn’t detect when you sip and after swallowing it.
